Report identifies future mega-earthquake hotspots
Aon Benfield has published a new report ‘When The Earth Moves: Mega-Earthquakes To Come?’ in conjunction with the Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre. Following the 2010 Chile earthquake, the new research identifies the Caribbean, Cascadia in North America, Chile, Indonesia and Japan as areas where mega-earthquakes of moment magnitude (Mw) 8+ are most likely to occur in the future.

Probability of mega-quake hitting Pacific Northwest coast of the United States assessed

Strong Evidence on Climate Change Underscores Need for Action

Researchers show how far South American cities moved in 8.8 Chile quake
The massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck the west coast of Chile last month moved the entire city of Concepción at least 10 feet to the west, and shifted other parts of South America as far apart as the Falkland Islands and Fortaleza, Brazil.

FEMA and European disaster management agencies meet to discuss large scale disaster preparedness
Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate, deputy administrator Tim Manning, and associate administrator Bill Carwile joined representatives from the NOAA National Weather Service, Swedish emergency management agencies, and representatives from the European Commission for a workshop in Boulder this week to discuss preparedness and ways to ensure effective communication in the event of a widespread catastrophic disaster. In addition to sharing ideas and best practices, the workshop included discussions designed to improve response plans for space-weather incidents that could disrupt communications networks and other infrastructure in the US and Europe.

FEMA And The FCC Announce Adoption Of Standards For Wireless Carriers To Receive And Deliver Emergency Alerts Via Mobile Devices
As part of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), the nation’s next generation of emergency alert and warning networks, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today announced the adoption of the design specifications for the development of a gateway interface that will enable wireless carriers to provide its customers with timely and accurate emergency alerts and warnings via their cell phones and other mobile devices.
